Somewhat sad rant/vent Empty
PostSubject: Somewhat sad rant/vent   Somewhat sad rant/vent EmptyFri Jul 11, 2014 11:18 pm

Sorry to clog up this fun-filled place with my problems, but I have to write this somewhere.

My aunt was born with cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that messes with peoples' lungs, immune systems, and gastrointestinal tracts. My aunt has trouble breathing all the time, is always short of breath, gets sick extremely easily, and can't fight off even mild diseases. She wasn't predicted to live past 18. She's in her 30s now, and still fighting. But in the last two months, she's been hit with all sorts of stuff.

It all started with a routine "tune-up" at the hospital. CF patients have to go into the hospital every so often for IV antibiotics. She has a "peripherally inserted central catheter", or "PICC line" inserted into her arm. She can't have a regular IV inserted because her veins are very fragile. Anyways, after her PICC was removed, blood clots formed in her arm, and traveled to her neck. She was in extreme pain for a few days before we brought her back into the hospital and found out about the clots. She was put on some blood thinners and anticoagulants to get rid of the clots.

Then, a week later, she started complaining about abdominal pain, nausea, and she had a fever. We brought her back into the hospital. As it turns out, my aunt had hydronephrosis, or water retention in the kidneys. She was put on more antibiotics, and she recovered fairly quickly.

Soon after, my aunt started getting pain in her left leg. It got to be so bad that she couldn't stand up, and we had to call an ambulance. Guess what? More blood clots. By now, you should be seeing a pattern. Pain, hospital, medication, recovery, repeat. Pain, hospital, medication, recovery, repeat. By this point, I would have lost my mind and given up. But my aunt has always been a strong woman. She took more blood thinners, and the clots cleared up. But the doctors found something... strange in an ultrasound of her leg.

My aunt has May-Thurner Syndrome, an incredibly rare condition characterized by compressed veins in the left leg. Only 2 to 5 percent of people diagnosed with vein disorders in the legs are diagnosed with May-Thurner. This is what caused the blood clots in her leg. She now has to have a procedure done where they will insert a stent into her veins and decompress them. Her surgery is scheduled for the 22nd. We thought it was over, that she would be fine from here on out. But fate has a sick sense of humor.

The last few days, my aunt's leg has been hurting worse and worse, and she's not been able to eat lately. Just an hour ago, she left for the hospital after the pain got to be too severe.  Right now I'm sitting at home, waiting for a call telling me what she's going through now. I wish I could have gone, but my grandma said that I should stay home.

I'm worried about my aunt. She's gone through so much in the last two months, and she's still fighting. I admire her tenacity, but there's only so much any human being can take. I'm worried that, one day, she'll decide that she can't take it any more. I've had nightmares about it. I don't want it to happen.

Again, sorry for ruining the normally cheery mood here, but I needed to vent a bit. At the very least, I hope I've brought attention to some very serious diseases and moved you to look into them.
